Students have several choices when it comes to studying intensive Arabic language at the Noor Majan Arabic Institute! The Noor Majan Arabic Institute has two campuses in Oman: in Ibri and Muscat. They also have a partnership with the AALIM in Mekenes, Morocco that will enrich your global education. Students can choose to study for a summer or semester at one of these campuses exclusively OR take advantage of the 'Rihla' (journey) option to study Arabic at in both countries by splitting time between Oman and Morocco!
Online Arabic Language
While study abroad is cancelled because of the pandemic, CMU students may study Arabic language online with Noor Majan Institute. The 8-week summer program starts in June with classes offered in the morning. You may study Arabic online this year, then study abroad in 2022! Ask us about the generous national scholarships available to study language abroad.
Semester Program
There are two options to building your semester with Noor Majan. You may choose to spend the entire semester at the Noor Majan campus in Muscat, Oman. You also have the choice to split your semester between Noor Majan campus in Muscat, Oman and their partner institution in Mekenes, Morocco through the 'Rihla' option! The semester program focuses on intensive Arabic language as well as economics and political science related to the Middle East.
- Muscat, Oman - Full Semester
- Spend your semester studying at the Noor Majan campus in Muscat, the capital city of Oman! The Noor Majan campus is located in the hart of the Al-Khuwair neighborhood near the central marketplace. The location is ideal for students, with proximity to restaurants, cafes and stores. The centralized location is close to many of the exciting places to visit in Muscat, including the Al-Qurum Beach, the Muscat Royal Opera House, the Sultal Qaboos Grand Mosque, the historic Mutrah and Corniche markets and the Omani National Museum and Palace. The campus is located only fifteen minutes from the Muscat International Airport.
- Meknes, Morocco and Ibri, Oman - Full Semester 'Rihla' Option
- The Rihla semester program focuses on broadening awareness of the Middle East and North African region through economics and Arabic language. The semester is split into two 'rihla' (the Arabic word for journey). The first rihla takes place at the Noor Majan campus in Ibri, Oman for 6-7 weeks, where students take Arabic language courses to improve their skills. The second rihla of 10 weeks takes students to Morocco where they will focus on both economics of the region as well as continuing their study of Arabic language.
- About Ibri, Oman: Ibri is located in the Dhahira region of Oman, the site of the country's earliest human habitation. Today it is home to over 100,000 people as the capital of the region. Ibri is within close proximity to the world's largest sand desert; however, it is a short drive to the Omani Gulf Coast. Ibri has many historical sites such as the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bat and the famous Ibri fort. There are also many bustling markets where produce and locally made goods are available throughout the week.
- About Meknes, Morocco: Meknes is one of the oldest and most important cities in Morocco. Located in northern Morocco, it is a traditional medieval walled city. It was one of the four ancient imperial cities in the Kingdom of Morocco. Today it is a thriving metropolis of over a million people with a modern city center. Meknes is located less than two hours from the capital city of Rabat.
Summer Program
Students have three options for a summer program with Noor Majan. They may choose from the following:
- Rihla Summer Program: This program takes place over 8 weeks in the summer. The first four weeks take place in Meknes, Morocco and the second four weeks take place in Ibri, Oman. The focus of the program is intensive Arabic language and culture of both Morocco and Oman.
- Ibri, Oman Program: This program takes place over 9 weeks in the summer. The entire program is held on the Noor Majan campus in Ibri, Oman. The focus of the program is intensive Arabic language.
- Muscat, Oman Program: This program has the option of 4, 6 or 12 weeks over the summer. The entire program is held on the Noor Majan campus in Muscat, Oman. The focus of the program is intensive Arabic language.

Grading:
Upon arrival students take an assessment to determine their level. Throughout the course students take weekly quizzes and a final exam at the end of the course. Students are furthermore assessed through their homework and weekly oral presentations.

Apartments
All students live in student apartments. This type of accommodation is covered by the course fee. The apartments consist of shared two-, three- or four-bedroom apartments. Bedrooms are double occupancy. The fully equipped kitchen, lounge area, bathrooms, an automatic washing machine and flat screen TV are for shared usage within one apartment. All apartments are equipped with WiFi internet access. Bed linen is provided but you need to bring your own towels.
Host Families
Female students have the opportunity to live with Omani host families for the duration of their course. For this arrangement, Noor Majan charges an additional 150 OMR/month. The family provides a bed, wardrobe, desk, and bed linen and you will bring your own towels. Students will share the regular family meals. Add this intercultural experience while in Oman!

CMU Office of Study Abroad Scholarship:
Students who study abroad for a semester will have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship of up to $2,500. Students who study abroad in the summer for 2-7 weeks or who participate in faculty-led programs will have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship up to $500. Students who study abroad for 8 weeks or longer will have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship up to $750. Your Study Abroad Advisor will give you access to this application.
Gilman Scholarship: This program is administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. Applicants must receive a Pell Grant to be eligible to apply. Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad with the option to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Languages Supplement from the Gilman Program..
