The Language in Context Program
Eligibility: 0-2 semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent.

Designed for students who are beginning their Spanish language study or have completed up to two semesters of university-level Spanish, and wish to complete a full semester of academic work by combining language study with English language electives.

Program allows participants to improve their language skills, while pursuing studies focusing on Spain and Europe through history, art, political science, literature, and business. This is achieved through intensive language course work, area studies courses in English, a conversation exchange program, excursions, and homestays for participants.

Students take an intensive language course during their first few weeks of classes onsite. For the remainder of the program, students enroll in two Spanish language courses and two area studies courses in English. Students may substitute one or two regular University business classes in English for CIEE area studies courses.

The Language and Culture Program
Eligibility: 3-4 semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent.

Designed for students who have completed three to four semesters of university-level language instruction in Spanish and have achieved a low intermediate level of proficiency prior to participation.

The goal of the Language and Culture program is for intermediate-level students to further develop their Spanish language skills. This goal is achieved through intensive language coursework and content courses in Spanish, a conversation exchange program, excursions, and homestays.

The program allows participants to pursue studies in a variety of academic disciplines focusing on Spain and Europe in the target language. Students take an intensive language course during their first few weeks on-site. For the remainder of the program, students enroll in two Spanish language courses and two area studies courses in Spanish. A full course load is considered five courses.

The Liberal Arts Program
Eligibility: 5 semesters of college-level Spanish instruction or equivalent.

Designed for students who have completed a minimum of five semesters of university-level language instruction in Spanish, achieving an advanced level of proficiency prior to participation.

The goal of the Liberal Arts program is for advanced-level language students to further develop their spoken and written Spanish language skills. This is achieved through intensive language coursework, content courses in Spanish, direct enrollment at the Universidad de Alicante, homestays, a conversation exchange program, and an extensive program of excursions.

Students take an intensive Spanish language course during their first few weeks on-site. For the remainder of the program, students take one required advanced level Spanish language course and three electives chosen from Spanish language electives, CIEE content courses, and Universidad de Alicante courses.

Summer Language and Culture
Language classes are taught entirely in Spanish and are offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. For CIEE content courses in Spanish, 4 semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent is required.

Provides an opportunity for short-term, intensive study of the Spanish language. The six-week program is open to qualified undergraduates with an interest in Spanish language and contemporary Spain.

The goals of the Language and Culture program are to develop students' Spanish language skills and increase their knowledge of Spanish art, cinema, and culture. This is achieved through intensive language coursework and content courses along with Spanish homestays and excursions.

Students are required to take one Spanish language course and one content course. Content courses in Spanish art, film, politics, economics, and culture are available in English and/or Spanish. Participants are placed in appropriate language courses based on a language examination given at the beginning of the program.

Scholarships:
CMU Office of Study Abroad Scholarship:
Scholarships in the amount of $250-$500 are available for faculty-led programs and summer study abroad, and students studying abroad for eight weeks or longer are eligible for up to $750; scholarships in the amount of $500-$2,000 are available for semester or academic year study abroad. Gilman Scholarship:
This program is offered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the institute of International Education. Applicants must receive a Pell Grant to be eligible to apply. Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Foundation For Global Scholars Scholarship:
The Foundation for Global Scholars awards scholarships for students in three cycles throughout the year. Scholarships amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500. Applicant must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen and must be enrolled at a U.S. college or university.
